Technical Comments

Many species of lepidoptera lay their eggs on to commercial crops where their caterpillars can cause extensive damage. Currently the primary biological control is the nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae, while the predatory bug Macrolophus, (see whitefly section) and lacewing larvae (see aphid section) will both feed on moth eggs as well as young caterpillar. Pheromone traps ( pages) can be used to monitor adult moth activity of a number of species. Lepinox Plus (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki) is a biopesticide spray with both curative and preventative activity for caterpillar.

Activity / Control

Use to control overwintering stage of codling moth (Cydia pomonella) and oriental fruit moth (Cydia molesta) and a range of other caterpillar species. Also so used to control shore fly (Ephydridae) and large pine weevil. Foliar sprays for caterpillar control or soil drench when pest first seen. Overwintering stages of codling moth (Cydia pomonella) and oriental fruit moth (Cydia molesta) and other caterpillar species. Also used for shore fly (Ephydridae) and can be used for large pine weevil control. Application releases nematodes which seek out insect larvae and in some cases pupae.

Application Method

Caterpillar foliar spray or soil drench when pest first seen. Codling moth or Oriental Fruit moth September to October. Temperature range 14 - 30°C. Shore fly: Apply as a heavy spray or drench. Application releases nematodes which seek out insect larvae and in some cases pupae.

Application Rate

Caterpillar (Noctuidae & Pyralidae), wet areas first, spray directly onto caterpillars. Repeat 5 - 7 or 7 - 14 days. 250 million per 500 m2. Codling moth and Oriental Fruit moth, overwintering stage: apply when trunks and soil are thoroughly wet as a coarse spray to remain wet for at least 8 hours. 250 million per 150 m2. Shore fly: Apply as a heavy spray or drench at a rate of 250 million per 500 m2

About
