What is orchid bark used for?

Orchid bark is used as a growing medium for orchids, providing excellent drainage and airflow around the roots. It helps mimic the natural conditions many orchids grow in, where roots are exposed to air rather than dense soil.

Can I use this orchid bark on its own?

Yes, coarse orchid bark can be used on its own, especially for orchids that require very free-draining conditions. It can also be blended with other materials like perlite or charcoal to create a tailored mix.

What size bark is best for orchids?

This coarse 15–35mm grade is ideal for larger orchids or those that need maximum airflow around their roots. Smaller or younger orchids may prefer a finer grade for slightly increased moisture retention.

How often should I repot orchids using bark?

Orchid bark gradually breaks down over time, so it is typically recommended to repot every 12–24 months to maintain good drainage and structure.

Does orchid bark hold moisture?

Orchid bark holds a small amount of moisture while still allowing excess water to drain freely. This balance helps prevent root rot while keeping roots hydrated.

Is this bark suitable for other plants?

While designed for orchids, it can also be used for other plants that prefer free-draining, aerated conditions, such as bromeliads or as a soil improver in specialist mixes.

Is Melcourt Orchid Bark peat-free?

Yes, Melcourt Orchid Bark is a peat-free growing medium, making it a more environmentally responsible choice for gardeners.
